Eyebrow Goals: My Microblading Adventure
Let me start this blog post by saying that the power of a strong eyebrow game is no joke.
Before my microblading experience, my eyebrows could have easily been described as non-existent. They were blonde, very hard to see, and there was little shape to them.
In November 2017, I entered a 1,000-follower giveaway to get my eyebrows microbladed by a talented, local artist.
I was determined to win this Instagram giveaway because I wanted to be able to wake up in the morning and not feel the need to fill in my eyebrows. I wanted to be barefaced and have some shape to my face.
To my surprise, I ended up winning the giveaway through @supernaturalbrows. I was beyond excited to have my eyebrows done by someone whose work I had admired for months.
I loved Hannah’s work for several reasons. She was a pro at choosing a color pigment that complimented my skin’s undertone. When brow-mapping it was accurate and ideal for my unique face shape. Lastly, her strokes looked soft and natural. Another reason I started following Hannah’s work in the first place is that she is a licensed master esthetician. This gave her an edge compared to some other artists because she has a strong understanding of skin, which is important when performing permanent cosmetics on different skin types.
The day I had my eyebrows microbladed, I was nervous because I have never had a tattoo in my life. Would they turn out good? Would my pain tolerance be high enough to get a tattoo on my literal and actual face? My appointment soon rolled around. She used a numbing cream on my eyebrows and left it on for about 10-15 minutes while I signed paperwork and we discussed aftercare.
After that, I laid back and she mapped my eyebrow shape and we chose a color together. She is an expert but always welcomed discussion if I felt hesitant about anything.
At this point, it was tattoo time. I couldn’t feel a thing because of the numbing cream we put on earlier. All I could hear was the strokes she was making in my eyebrow area, which sound a lot like paper tearing.
After about 30 minutes of laying down listening to The Office playing in the background, it was complete. She passed me the mirror to look at the completed, and I couldn’t believe it - I had eyebrows! I immediately fell in love with them. You can find a video of my eyebrows immediately after the procedure, here.
The healing process takes about six weeks to heal properly. The first week after I had my eyebrows done, I gently washed my tattoo with warm water, patted them dry with a paper towel and applied the ointment she had provided me with. For the first two weeks though, it’s recommended you don’t sweat or do any strenuous activities, don’t get your brows wet (like fully submerged in a shower or pool), you can’t wear makeup, and most importantly don’t pick at your eyebrows! The eyebrows will feel itchy and you’ll want to pick at them, but this can cause an infection, loss of pigment and even scarring. So put those fingers away unless you’re washing the eyebrow area.
After the initial two weeks pass, it’s important to use sunscreen on your eyebrows to protect the pigment in your eyebrows.
A couple of months later, I went back in for a touchup. We added some more fluffs in the front of my eyebrows and added some density to any other areas we felt necessary. The longest part of this appointment was leaving on the numbing cream. The microblading itself took less than 15 minutes.
Bottom line, I am so thankful I won Hannah’s giveaway. Getting my eyebrows microbladed significantly cut down my time getting ready in the morning, and helps me feel more confident when I am not wearing makeup. After two years of having them done, I can still say I am obsessed with the results. I would recommend to anyone to get their eyebrows microbladed, but make sure you do your research before this permanent makeup procedure.
If you’re in the Seattle area, I’d highly recommend scheduling a microblading appointment with Hannah. Be sure to follow her on Instagram here.
